Social media marketing leadership speaker – Jeff Molander

Jeff Molander is a social media marketing leadership speaker and proclaims, “Social media ‘research’ is disingenuous, pompous trash – not qualified guidance.”

Realize that those who fund this nonsense and guide are ALSO those who stand to financially BENEFIT by your saying yes (to spending on social media).

So, let me save you the time of reading the next bit of “research” on social media: It’s huge. Everyone uses it. “C’mon… you know you wanna Tweet… here, have a taste, its’ free this time.”

Seriously: They say social media is so important that it’s changing everything… so broad that it includes anything… and so profound that nothing can measure it.

And the number one reason for you to invest in it? “Your customers are there… see? Look at the big numbers.” And all this drum-beating works. It’s duping marketers into spending on the old mass marketing machine.

That’s why we STILL spend billions on banner ads that we know won’t work. Look – this rush to JUST DO IT is why we’re INCREASING spending on social media… again this year… but we’re admitting we can’t measure it.

But we have no shame in labeling it effective when asked. Fact: most companies STILL measure digital marketing success QUANTITATIVELY… Facebook friend count, amount of buzz, number of visitors, Twitter followers, visitors. Well, some marketers measure success this way… certainly not the trail-blazers that I’ve been studying.

Action item: Ignore this fake “research” and realize that those who fund it and advise you are ALSO those who stand to financially BENEFIT by your saying yes. Say no more often… rather, ask why?

Action item: Be the crazy person at your next staff meeting. Suggest that the rules of business have not forever changed because of social media. Reject the notion that engaging, Tweeting and Friending is more important than making sales – or that if you DO those social things that somehow sales and leads will just happen. That’s the problem I see and what you can do to improve your business.

Now go make ’em crazy!
